I am wondering if the Kindle Fire I just received has a problem or if this is normal:

I was able to plug in the Kindle for charging, start it and select the time zone and verify that it is registered, but I turned away for a minute and when I looked back at it, the screen that says "Kindle Fire" was up and I can't get it to do anything.  Is it because it needs to fully charge?  I unplugged it, turned it off (took about 8 seconds to shut down), then turned it back on, but all I get is the "Kindle Fire" screen.

Do I have a faulty Kindle?

It was charged for 4 1/2 hours.  I am working with a Kindle "specialist," who asked me to charge for another hour.  He is going to call back.  If not fixed, it's going to have to be replaced, he said.

I have a similar issue.  Got Kindle Fire today, plugged in power supply, waited an hour, turned on, connected to wifi, registered and then began software update.  Came back in 15 minutes with Kindle Fire showing on screen.  Tried hard boot with no luck.  Online chat with tech support (level 1 was worthless - india - automated responses) then gave my phone number and level 2 called me.  After 30 minutes trying the same things (basically just hard boots), they are sending me a replacement which should arrive tomorrow.  I'll be surprised if anything changes with the new Fire.

You are lucky to get your replacement tomorrow.  Mine won't get here till Friday.  I had the same experience as Newbie.  Tech support was pretty good, but if the equipment won't respond to a cold start, there isn't much else they can do with it, it would seem.

Surprise!  Received replacement KF an hour ago.  Plugged it into the power supply and it turned on by itself.  Unlocked the screen, chose the time zone and it automatically determined that it was registered and then it started to download the update by itself.  This took about 3 minutes and then it started the installation automatically.  After 2 reboots and waiting about 6 minutes, the update was complete and the KF is now ready to use.  Will keep you posted if we run into any issues.

Before going through the hassle of trying to get it replaced, (Like I thought I might have to do when it wouldn't turn on when I took it out of the box today), I did a google search and saw that others were having a similar issue, and the solution was to hold down the power button for 60 seconds. Mine turned on after about 30 seconds. Was super happy and relieved. Cheers, I hope this helps someone.
